FCIAC Football Blog: Fairfield Prep-Greenwich Notebook

We all know by now... Greenwich defeated Fairefield Prep on Tuesday, 34-0. But what you, the general public, do not know about, was the media love-fest on the Greenwich High School Field.

There was the tradeoff - As the correspondent for the Fairfield Citizen-News, I traded quotes with my Brooks Community Newspapers counterpart, Zack Greenspon of the Greenwich Citizen. And there was the Sharing of the Stats with the Greenwich Post's Paul Silverfarb (who, though he turns the big 3-0 on Saturday, still managed to throw a tight spiral back to the referees.

And the tradeoffs continued off the field - there were requests for scores from News 12's Damian Andrew, calls from the New Canaan and Staples games coming in respectively from Phil Soto-Ortiz and Jason Intrieri, recaps of the first half for WNLK/WSTC's Matt Levine, and me making some horrible, horrible live updates to WELI-AM that set radio back about 200 years. And, of course, friendly exchanges with Greenwich Time's Jesse Quinlan and Connecticut Post's Mike Puma.

I did a little better during Rob Adams' pregame show on WGCH-AM... until I was distracted by the succulent scent of Nick Angatto... who was bringing in the burgers, dogs, and fries from Top Dog (Nick's gonna beat me for that one!). I broke Cardinal (no pun intended) Rule #1 - never attend a high school football game on a full stomach.

What does this all mean? And why does anyone care? Because even though we all work for separate entities, we all help each other out, and we all have each other's back. Even in the media, it's all about teamwork.

Number 26 Is... Sean Sutton, and how come he hasn't been talked about more often? We saw (or read about) the bone-jarring hits in the FCIAC championship game, and last night he topped it off with a pair of interceptions.

The Greenspon Files: Like I mentioned above, Zack grabbed Greenwich interviews for sharing purposes. Here's the great quotes he got from Jonathan Meyers:

On getting a shutout:
"It was great. Coming off that Staples loss was really tough and something we don't want to experience again. A loss at home really hurt us. I think there was a bunch of fire in our belly."

On seniors' last game:
"This team is so great because of our seniors. They made us what we are. Just to pull out this win for them today felt really good. I'm going to miss them next year."

On defense coming up big:
"That first drive, coming out. That's why our defense is so great this year. We come out after that first drive where we kind of looked a little down and we shut them out the rest of the game. Definitely a great defensive effort all around. Our defensive backs stepped it up today."

Number 4 is...Steve Strazza, who really hasn't received the credit he deserves for the Cardinals. Strazza caught 4 passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. I got to get the story straight against from Agnatto, but he was telling me that last season, Strazza would routinely burn a coach who was an All-America defensive back at Sacred Heart.

Suit Up... Nick Edwards suited up but did not play for Prep. The running back has been cleared to play despite an ankle injury, but was only going to play against the Jesuits if needed. The question for Saturday - how will the ankle hold up on the old-style AstroTurf on Saturday. Hey, I'm sure he'll be good to go. To quote Shane Falco in The Replacements, "Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever."
